Rev Mr Phil Richardson - Parish Deacon
Although baptised in the Church of England Phil didn't have a Christian upbringing. Phil first heard the Gospel during his year off in South Africa when a colleague from the firm he was working for gave him space on his floor when he had nowhere to live. Charity in action!
Phil became Christian at university and quickly began gravitating towards the Roman Catholic Church. This process continued during a couple of years in Sri Lanka where he received instruction from two excellent priests and he was finally received in 1992 at St Joseph's in Redhill.
Phil and his family moved to Lancing four years later and started to attend the Holy Family where they felt very much at home right from the beginning. Being asked by Fr Tony Lovegrove to read at Mass was a significant turning point. To be a channel for the Word of God gave Phil the grace and impetus to reflect more deeply on Scripture and its place in the Mass and ultimately to think about whether or not he was being called to some further form of service. After talking things through with Fr Daryl George he felt able to support me in discerning a diaconal vocation. Formation at the Diocesan Seminary, Wonersh, with a dozen others in the same situation was inspiring, challenging and often profound whilst ordination in 2013 on the Feast of Ss Peter and Paul was unforgettable and has left an indelible mark.
Phil is hugely grateful for simply being a deacon here in East Worthing; he still feels 'new' and although constrained by the demands of work he hopes to do more as time goes on.
