In this sacrament, the grace first received in our baptism is perfected. Through the gift of The Holy Spirit, we are united more closely to Christ and our relationship with the Father is strengthened. As our connection with the Church is increased, so is our responsibility to take part in the Church's Mission, deepened by our words and deeds. We bear witness to the Christian faith. All those who have been baptized are encouraged to celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation, since it completes the initiation process of Baptism.
Preparation to receive the sacrament of Confirmation involves a number of sessions for the candidates. The aim is to deepen the candidates’ personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to awaken and deepen in them a sense of belonging to the Church in whose life they are to take an active part. The sacrament is celebrated each year, generally in May or June, with our young people from the Worthing Deanery at Arundel Cathedral. All young people who are 14 years or above in September, and at least school year 10, are eligible to register for the Parish Confirmation Preparation Programme. Parents are required to attend the Launch evening at the beginning and the Service of Light (Lucenarium) just before the Confirmation ceremony takes place. Sessions usually begin in the New Year. The sessions are led by a member of the Parish clergy.
THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
Baptism, the Eucharist, and the Sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the "Sacraments of Christian initiation," whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace.
For "by the Sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.
